Niematulai Longstratt, Owner of RNL Authentics, LLC

Dr. Joslin Mar-Dai Pickens, Owner of Vegans on the Run, Definitely Natural, Chair of General Communication and General Studies at SUSLA, and author of “7 Days Vegan: Vegan Remixes for Everyday Eating”.

Topic:

Black Americans continue to experience worse health outcomes than white Americans when it comes to heart health. According to the Center for Disease Control (CDC), African Americans ages 18-49 are two times as likely to die from heart disease than white Americans, and African Americans ages 35-64 are 50% more likely to have high blood pressure than their white counterparts. These deaths are preventable and showcase just how much further we have to go. It’s important we continue to honor Black culture and cuisine because of the contributions to the American diet, but we can also advocate for inclusion of healthier choices while demonstrating that. This conversation aims to help us navigate the myths concerning African American food and celebrate the chefs in our community, making it more possible to see a healthier, Black future.
